what does the '|' do???


I usually use the command

ls | more

i know what it does
but a couple of dayz before i just tried to search some
formal documentation typa thing for '|'
but couldn't find it?

can anyone plz tell me
what does it do???

The | is a pipe symbol. It takes the output of one command and directs it to the input of another. In this example, you are taking the output from ls, and piping it to the input of more.

Search for "pipe" and you should be able to find heaps of information.

PS: Try "less", it is a better version of more.

The pipe mechanism is described on the bash man pages. Do 'man bash' and look for the paragraph Shell grammar - Pipelines.

YIKES---type "pipe" into Google and then take shelter.....

Go to TLDP** (Ithink) and get "Bash guide for beginners" by Machtelt Garrels. And buy a book on shell scripting,,,,,
