what does error while parsing number mean?

I get error while parsing number when I try to boot a dual boot machine into Windows XP. I have added the following code into my menu.lst file

title Windows
root (hd1,0)
savedefault
makeactive
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
chainloader +1

I have done this before and it has worked fine. I can only see a single partition on the Windows (slave) drive.

I can boot Windows OK from the BIOS

It might help to see the output of 'fdisk -l' and the content of /etc/fstab (just the device and mount point info for the partitions.

Here's a sample from my notes...
Code:
title Windows xp
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
chainloader +1

Thanks bigrigdriver, I've looked at the output of 'fdisk -l' and I can see the problem, I'll put a fresh HDD in and clean install Linux on it.

Hi homey, I tried rootnoverify instead of root, but it didn't make any difference, but bigrigdriver's solved the problem. Thanks anyway.
