What does /dev/sda2 correspond to in menu.lst?

Opensuse is still using GRUB 1 in that case it is (hd0,1)

The OP also has an installation on (hd0,4) which probably means that previous os wasn't removed but new OS was installed side-by-side.
In either case support has ended on 11.3 & 11.4, unless, 11.4 is Evergreen. The present is 12.2 with support until jan 2014 & future 12.3.

Reading that I remember now that previously I had compiled (with changes) once the kernel (do not remember which version) and tried to boot from it. Now that kernel does show up the boot menu at startup.

Meanwhile, could anyone explain me that what is meant by (hd0,4), (hd0,1) etc.
What do they represent?

HD0 = sda is the first HD to boot
(HD0.1) is the second partition = sda2 GRUB start counting at Zero
You can read all this on the explanation of GRUB1 just google for it
