What does CVS means

I 've seen this word in many site, especialy on open source software release but I don't know what does it means

It means Concurrent Versions System--basically a way to have many people work on the same software without everything getting confusing.

More info as well from the gnu cvs website. You may also have heard of subversion (SVN) its a tool similar to CVS.
