Most distros come with GCC/G++ which allows you to make programs in C/C++, you will usually need to install the developer versions of these programs to compile your own code, if I remember correctly.

Minimum for debian is:
Code:
sudo apt-get install build-essential
Depending on what you want to compile you will also need the developer files for vaious libs.
