what do I do with the rest of installation cds?
I just installed SuSE 9.0 [5 cds]
My installation used only 2. What do I do with the rest? :D it was the same with fedora [it susks] |
Keep them around, probably cd's with extra applications, documentation and source files.. or just throw them out, use as coasters, etc.. its your choice, can't be that hard of a decision.. ;)

can I find xchat or amsn on them? :)
or at least some driver for my graphic card that doesn't enable acceleration? isn't there some autorun thing or an installation program that asks for the REST of the cds or at least explains their use [coasters sounds fine but it won't do, sorry]? I tried one.. a2ps, acct, alevt, antiword, apache1, apache2.. what are those???? I need to find some description documentary.. thing |
At a guess, I would say that one disc is source, the other is international. Since you're an english speaker who probably didn't want the source code, that's why you didn't need them. (then again, see the sig)
apache1 and apache2 would be the apache web server, something a desktop user wouldn't need. Don't recognize the other ones of the top of my head. If those were on the two "useless" cd's that would put a sizable hole in my theory. Personally, my favorite thing to do with extraneous cds is to microwave them. Preferably in someone else's microwave. :D |
Linux program names aren't usually very descriptive, but googling them will usually give you a fair idea of what you have. Isn't there a manual (printed) which explains what's in the package or where you can find that info?

In Yast -> Software -> Install and Remove Software you can see what is installed and what is available (from your CDs).

hey linmix, didn't you have problems with your nvidia device? :) cause i'm having :)
anyway, after a brief search [cd #2] I managed to install bitchx, xchat, but I was hoping for amsn [must be on .. still, there were lots of $@^gnome$^@.rpm-s [wierd looking names] that required additional libraries so I gave up and started searching for some help.. crazyeddie740, changing all the words in linux wouldn't require a full cd, would it? Mabye 300 MB max.. there's still 3 cds left :) I'm not a desktop user, I'll try to get the most of my system, although by the size of that docs, it will take a few years :S mabye I should start reading them and then try and understand the additional applications :D:D however, I couldn't find any manuals for the applications and I am NOT going to try them all to see what they do :) Mabye someone can help ? |
thanks 2damncommon
I was on the phone for 1 hour so that's why my message came so late :)) sounds like windows.. great, thanks a lot :) |
