What distro is most stable? (Debian-Based)

I am thinking maybe LMDE or Mepis.

Ubuntu is VERY buggy. I just uninstalled it. I need a new OS, preferably debian-based.

Jenni 10-15-2011 09:48 PM

Um.. Why not try Debian stable, then?

Acutical 10-15-2011 09:53 PM

Because, debian isn't updated often.

Jenni 10-15-2011 09:59 PM

Could give mint a shot then.

k3lt01 10-15-2011 10:05 PM

If you are thinking LMDE why don't you try Debian (Wheezy) Testing. LMDE is just Debian Testing with some fancy additions. If your bias against Debian is it is not updated "often" then you'd be better of with Debian Testing rather than LMDE because LMDE restricts updating if you do not know how to change settings.

Go Debian Testing. On another note, Mepis is Stable, but that's because it is based on Debian stable, so Mepis's software will be slightly out dated too

Well, it shouldn't if it tends to be stable. If you want a fresh distro - it won't be stable.

sycamorex 10-16-2011 04:52 AM

I agree with Mr.Alex. Either you want a stable distro (which means mostly security updates) or a distro with frequent updates (and therefore, inevitably not so stable).

Debian Stable (possibly plus Backports if you need some newer apps). I would never recommend Debian Testing for someone who needs stability as their number one priority.

Things tend to break on updates, my debian squeeze system runs well & hasn't broken, except the mistakes I made with /etc/apt/sources.list, which were easily corrected. My wheezy system because it's testing was broken until updates, but you can expect that from testing.

It's testing platform for debian

Who marked posts 3,4,5,& 6 unhelpful? What was wrong with those posts? How were they unhelpful? No one was rude, mean or anything like that, even the OP was given an unhelpful rating in a subsequent post. Genuine question, does the person who did this even know what the helpful/unhelpful thing is for?

etech3 10-16-2011 12:56 PM

security+stable=squeeze.
Just update the apps that you want like Firefox or Thunderbird.

Lately I've been seeing that & it can be irritating to reply to a thread & feel appreciated. I can understand getting a not helpful mark if you u come in with negative comments but nothing in the thread deserved a not helpful rating.

k3lt01 10-16-2011 01:31 PM

Yes Eddy I agree, I have been seeing it alot lately as well.

Anyway back to the grind for today :hattip:

The ONLY reason I could see that it would be marked UnHelpful is whomever answered a post didn't just come out and hand feed that person an answer he would accept.

The OLY time I mark one UnHelpful if is the person is making fun of me, making me look like an iD10t.

Over time, I've found MOST of the answers I was given were truly done to help me and to those who have...GOD BLESS them. :hattip: I'm not the brightest crayon in the box and sometimes I ask really stupid questions, but to me, they're serious in nature, I don't know the answer, so I ask.

Great weather here today near Shreveport, LA. Temperatures in the mid-80's, low humidity, sun's shining and a slight wind. Great day for a picnic, sunbathing, or playing golf, LOL! But, I don't play golf.

GOD BLESS,
Warmest Regard,

"Buck"
