What distro could i install on an old apple ibook m2453
 

got my hands on an apple ibook m2453
its got like 64mb ram
6gb hdd

i want to install a distro of linux to just use command line

googled around..couldnt really find anything to this model....thought maybe you guys could shed some light...

You could try Debian, Lubuntu (Alternate install disc has a comman-line option), or MacPup. The lack of RAM is going to be a limitation for some things. But as long as you are only going to use the shell, it will be less of a problem. Nonetheless, if you have the opportunity to add some RAM, do so. Also, once you have the system running, look at tmux if you haven't already.

Yes, what Turbo said, try tmux, perhaps do a no-X installation of Debian, or an Ubuntu minimal installation, to achieve the same.

The ibook m2453 uses a powerpc microprocessor so Puppy is out since as far as I know is i386. As suggested my first choice is debian but you can see all of the available choices at distrowatch.com

Thanks michaelk, I misread macpup's system requirements. A G3 is going to be a challenge. If Debian does not work or is too heavy, OpenBSD might be another option. It has PPC support, but I'm not sure about the specific model. It can get by with very little RAM and 5.4 was just released.

nothing is booting off cd
i hold c key in and nothing...straight to mac os 8.6

maybe the cd rom drive is poked...wrote disks at 10 speed to be sure...still nothing

Make sure the downloaded ISO you are trying to boot is for PPC

The three distros you tried are not ppc. Of the distros available for that architecture, Lubuntu wants 128MB and I think Yellow Dog does too. Fedora only does ppc64, so you're left with Debian. The net install will enable you to get it without the GUI: the download link for the CD is on this page

im trying your install you suggested
but the guide is somewhat different
when i get to choose what packages to install i chose
cfdisk
ext4 support
nic drivers

but im just stuck in a loop...it wont let me install base system as it moans that the hard drive has not been prepared
i went to a shell to try run cfdisk but it says command not found...any ideas???
