What distribution for home setup with gui desktop

Hi

I am completely new to linux.

What distribution should I consider for a home setup. This would be on server (just for filesharing)and desktop (as multimedia - mostly mp3 player).

Thanx
Justin

Any desktop version will do, just make sure you install and setup SAMBA in it. SAMBA is available in any distro too.

Look into:
Linux Mint -----------------> http://linuxmint.com/
OpenSUSE -------------------> http://www.opensuse.org/en/
Ubuntu ---------------------> http://www.ubuntu.com/

Good luck to you.

Another user-friendly distro for beginners would be PCLinuxOS.

Check Distrowatch's Search page and choose applicable parameters (x86_64 is for 64bit, i686 is 32bit) -- it's a useful tool for choosing distros.

You can also try out any of these from this link, LiveCD.

I would also recommend Linux Mint particularly if you are going to use it for multimedia. Less work setting up! :)

Of course, it if excellent that you are already trying different distributions to make an informed choice!

I'm looking at using Opensuse, but I think it depends on our equipment

What do you mean by that?
If your equipment is very limited on memory or processing power you can set it up with a light weight graphical interface such as LXDE or Xfce, these are no as flashy as Gnome or KDE but if you are looking for better performance over good looking, that would be the route to take.

Good luck to you.
