What books should I be reading?
 

Hi,

What books would you consider absolute essentials for the Linux newbie? I haven't decided on a distro yet, and I'll have a desktop and separate server elsewhere.

Any help is appreciated.

My suggestion would be start with TLDP (www.tldp.org) or Linuxtopia (http://www.linuxtopia.org/online_books/index.html).

As a newbie, you can follow TLDP guides (find here: http://tldp.org/guides.html) which are treasure of knowledge. Rest if you face any problem or doubt, you can come back to the forum and ask your doubts.

It depends whether you are already familiar with Unix or not.If you are, you will benefit
greatly from the tldp guides previously mentioned. If you are unfamiliar with Unix, you
should look at textbooks such as "Unix in a Nutshell" (O'Reilly) or "Unix for the impatient" (Addison-Wesley)
to learn the basics of user account, groups, file ownership and permissions and system administration.
At the beginning, you will not need all the information that is in those textbooks, but as you learn Linux,
you will find such a Unix reference very handy.

As already said, tldp is a good resource.
You should start from there and then deepen what you prefer/want.

For distro, if you are totally newbie maybe Linux Mint is a good choice. But my suggestion is Slackware: fast, stable and force to learn ;)
