What are the minimum and recommended hard disk requirements of Gentoo?
Couldn't find it anywhere. It is not in the documentation of the home page of Gentoo. I know it is small compared to most laptops, but if I use it in a VM... Still important.

Pretty sure they used to have it. At one time Gentoo was a fancy LFS distro. They updated it a bit to make the install faster but the point is that you make a system. It isn't a typical distro as Fedora/Ubuntu/Opensuse is.
You'd almost have to add up the parts of your desired install. Gentoo claims they post the minimum hardware requirements in each book for the arch. https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:Main_Page Example. https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handboo...e_requirements I tend to find stated minimums almost should be stated as the "very" minimum. |
Generally when it's not documented I go with at least 20 GB for the os on the HDD.
Than I allocate 500M for the /boot, 30 GB for /root, and 1-2 GB for the /swap. This guy installed Gentoo on a Pentium 233MHz with only 64MB of RAM- https://superuser.com/questions/1264...e-requirements When you get the chance check out the "Gentoo Handbook". The hardware requirements for each architecture are placed in our Gentoo Handbook, in the Choosing the right installation medium chapter for your respective architecture. https://www.gentoo.org/support/ Good luck with your installation and enjoy your Gentoo Linux.:) |
