what are the exact concise steps of a Mandrake install,

Now that I've burned Mandrake 9.2 on a CD

from this download

Now that I have my Windows XP pro machine installed on 45 gig, I'd like to put the other 30 gig or more to good use w / Linux.


I thought by going into BIOS & making it so that the CD would be the boot source, it would let me install it.

Instead it says:

"Boot failure
select proper boot device"


Could someone please explain to me how to properly load Lilo or Grub. Or rather how do I adjust BIOS?

What do I do next to install Mandrake Linux on that other partition?

looks like you downloaded and burned the wrong thing. you need to download and burn the install cd's iso's ...i.e.

also, make sure to download the "ISO" (example filename mandrake92i386.iso) version of the OS, not the source files... most sites that offer linux download have the ISO versions in a separate folder on the FTP server. That way you will be sure that you are creating a BOOTABLE disk 1, not just a disk 1 with all the install files. previous poster is correct too, you really do need all three of the disks if you want to install anything beyond the core (command line) operating system, such as the GUI, apache, applications, etc.

that it is, you still aren't explaining where I find what I need to get the initial "start-up" Please understand, I tweaked BIOS so that it the CD reader would be the 1st and only BOOT device, and NOTHING HAPPENED --- except that error message UNDERSTAND?

to double check, make sure they are :

Im not sure, but I think ISO is a proprietary format used by Roxio/Adaptec EZ CD Creator. Best way to solve your problem would be to get a copy of that (not to hard to find on the net).

When buring iso files in windows, you should only have to double click on the file in windows explorer or my computer (do NOT open ezcdcreator or nero first). The ISO format is a snapshot of the entire burn, including settings, meaning when you double click, it will already have decided that it is a data cd, bootable, etc etc.... you should not have to select any of these options.... it is all encoded in the iso format.

The link to "md5sum file link" just gives a page that says:

Which is probably the full mumbo jumbo long name for the file I downloaded

So I downloaded the wrong file, all 650 Mb, so now where is the right file?

try what I suggested regarding doubleclicking on the iso file in windows explorer.

if that doesnt work, circumvent the problem. take the disk that you already burned and look at its contents on a windows box. do a search for "rawwrite" or download it here

this is an msdos based utility for creating a linux boot floppy. its really easy to use.... basically you launch the app, tell it your floppy is drive a: (make sure to use a new or formated floppy disk), and point the app to a file on the linux cd called "boot.img" located in a folder called images off the root of the disk.

Once you create the boot floppy, reboot with the floppy in the drive (make sure to go back into the bios and reacitve boot to floppy) and make sure the linux disk is in the cdrom drive. should be pretty painless.

So you are saying that Roxio Easy CD creator 5.0 is a piece of crap?

I didn't double click. I just right clicked & hit the "add to CD project" as usual, and it burnt on to CD as usual as far as I can tell.

Although now that I examine the properties of the CD copy, it says "opens with Roxio CD creator" clearly Roxio CD creator is not something that runs when I'm trying to boot off it.

dont do what you normally do (its clearly not working), follow my instructions. do NOT open the cdburning software before double clicking on the iso file! Double click on the iso file from windows explorer, not from withing the cdburing program. it sounds like you are doing this from whithin the cd creator software (windows explorer does not have a right mouse click option add to cdproject).

your are very close... you just need to figure out how to properly burn a cd from an iso file... should be plenty of tutorials out on the net on that subject. if you cant get your pc to boot to it, but all the files (should be several directories and numerous files in the root of the first disk) are there, do what I suggested to create a boot floppy.

it seems like you could spend your entire finding all the pieces to "open source" software before you actually get it to run, not to say that "closed pay sources" was ever any better.
