What are the default animation file format supported in Linux?

Hi all

I am nobie in Linux environment. I am creating a Dialogbox using wxGTK in which I want to play a animation. While I was in windows I can play .AVI files in Animaton Control (using Win32). Now I am freasher in Linux, so I need to know what are the default supports for running a animation in Linux. For example in "Search for file..." utility while searching a file Linux uses a animation in the top left corner. My question is
1. what kind of file is that?
2. How could I build such kind of files? (name of some
softwares)

If I want to run .AVI files then it will increase another dependency to my software to install gstreamer before installing my software. I dont want that.

I am using RedHat Linux Fedora core 4.

thanx in advance
Amit
