what are the best data retrieval tools for linux

ok don't trust fc4 on the automatic setup.
I also had a debian partition which seems to be gone.

Does anyone know of a good linux data retrieval tool that will return everything that has been deleted or overwritten for linux.

there are several for windows for these specific needs but I haven't found one for linux.

What needs to be done is retrieve the debian install that was once there and gain the information for my palm since that data is all gone and the debian partition has a full backup except the last 2 weeks.
thanks
