What applications are on my computer?

I am using Fedora 4. How can I get a list of application programs available to me on my computer?

I know that Perl and ANT are available to me, but none of my GUI tools show me this information.

Is there a terminal command that will list application programs?

Is the only way of knowing if Python is installed on my computer is to try and use it? Surely there is a way to get a list of available application programs.

rpm -qa | less
This will list all the apps installed on your computer. You can further use grep to search for specific

rpm -qa | grep python

If you are looking for some particular program you can type,

which programname
and if it exists in your path it will display its location.

ls /bin
ls /sbin
ls /usr/bin
ls /usr/local/sbin
ls /usr/local/bin
ls /usr/local/games
ls /usr/X11R6/bin
ls $KDEDIR/bin

there's probably more places to look but that's a start....
