What application will play DVD movies (the whole movie)

To play a DVD movie in Windows I use CyberLink Power DVD. It plays both movies from the DVD drive or from the Hard Disk. It will read automatically the VOB files and will also display all menus and play the movies and extras. What should I use in Linux to play DVD movies similarly? I tried to use VLC but it would play only one VOB file at a time (not whole movie). Same with the default Linux player ("totem" I think is called?). Any suggestions?

I have used VLC to get menus on DVDs. Not sure what issue you're having there. I think mPlayer can also handle DVDs if you still have problems.

Lots of different apps will play a DVD but you almost always need libdvdcss and it's friends to make them work. I've used Mplayer and Xine to play DVDs and I think I like Xine the best but it's kind of weird from a UI point of view. Anyway, you probably need libdvdcss, and don't forget libdvdread, libdvdnav, and libdvdplay either. I've never done it on Debian but it's pretty simple on Ubuntu for what that's worth.

It would help us better if we knew what distro you were using. most of the media players in linux play dvd's you'll need libdvdcss for encrypted dvd's

Agreed...we need to know what distro you're using because some distributions do not include software for dvd's, mp3's, and so forth because of copyright/legal reasons. If you're using a RedHat product (for instance), you're almost guaranteed to be lacking those required libraries...

A simple workarround for your problem of one vob at a time is to put all the vob's into vlc's playlist. Then it'll just play them one after another.

There's a little program that does the DVD menu thing for bigger applications.

to play the whole DVD in VLC you need to use the option OPEN DISC from the menu.

Since you stated you could already play the individual vob files I will guess you already have all the necessary software components installed.
