What a welcome to Linux...

Hello all.

First off I want to tell everyone that I'm a :newbie:

I've got my redhat 9 install up and running with openoffice and mozilla, but I've having lots of trouble trying to install anything that is not on the redhat disks.

I downloaded the plugins for flash and adobe, and figured out how to get them installed by unpacking them and then logging in as root and running the commands in the terminal window.

But I can figure out how to get the jre package to install. the file is called j2re-1_3_1_09-linux.-i586.rpm.bin.

When I double click on it just opens up a text window with a bunch of junk in it.

Also, I'm wondering what if any anti-viurs software I should get for this.

Thanks for any help from this wanting to convert M$ guy.

Thanks
James

hej

as yoy can see the package is a rpm that means that you shuold install it with the package installer that is with the distribution. So look in meanmenu, konfiguration and then package install...

As there are so few viruses for Linux (relatively speaking - one is too many (:)) you shouldn't need a virus guard. Linux also comes with built in firewalling. ie IPTables. If you insist on having one, f-prot and, I think, clamav do Linux av.

Welcome to the forum.

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/install-linux.html

"Installation of RPM File"

Of course that is an old version. 1.4.2 is the latest.
