What's the fastest way to upload 3gb of data to my dedicated linux server?

I've got both linux and vista on my home PC and I'm currently using winscp ftp-client, but only get an upload speed of 100kb/s. Does anyone know if I can somehow connect to my debian server and upload this data faster? (my cable connection should be 8mb/s upstreams)

You are probably thinking of your downstream speed. Especially on cable systems, it is highly unlikely that you have an 8 mb/s upstream connection. You most likely have an 8/1 mb plan (8 mb/s down 1 mb/s up). That would mean the theoretical max upstream line speed is 128 KB/s, hence why you are getting 100 KB/s on the transfer speed.

I'm paying like 10$ extra each month to my ISP for 7-10mb/s upstream instead of the standard 0.7-1mb/s.

What would the actual limit of 7mb/s be?

Realistically on a 7 mb line you would get somewhere around 800 KB/s. You may want to try a speedtest to make sure its not your connection (perhaps the isp didn't upgrade your connection for some reason). Go to http://www.speedtest.net/ and double check its not your connection first.

I did a speedtest to nuremberg where my server is located and got a 3600kb/s upload, weird.

Is your ISP selling you Bytes per second or bits per second?
remember 8 bits to a Byte.
Usually a Lower Case b means bits
and an Upper Case B means Bytes
so 8 million bits per second would equal 1 million Bytes per second

Note: Speed test site test results tend to vary with time of day and popularity of the specific site. The speed test site closest to me happens to provide much slower results than the one in Chicago.

You might try a "traceroute IPaddr" to the Server of interest to see where the choke point is. The speed that the ISP sells you is only good to the headend. If the choke point is past that then the ISP has no responsibility. The other thing that might shed some light would be a traceroute from the server back to your local Public IP address.
