What's the linux equivalent of ipconfig /release & renew


ifconfig something? maybe?

Help appreciated.

Try these commands...
ifdown eth0 / ifup eth0
or
dhclient eth0

If you're using wireless you can use iwconfig to check the status of wireless adapters.

Best way most likely is to just issue these commands since your definitely on a DHCP connection:

dhcpcd -k

And then simply run it again without the -k like:

dhcpcd

This will kill your DHCP connection and then running it will query the server to pull another IP. But don't be alarmed if the server gives you the same IP, most will cache the MAC addresses and just issue the same IP over and over..
