What's next?
I just installed Debian 3.0 and I can't figure out what to do next. Instructions kept whizzing by & I apparently missed something. After install was complete & I rebooted, the first prompt was "login" to which I typed username & then "Pass" & I put password. That worked out fine but then a few lines later it asked for a command at this prompt: username@usename~$. I looked around on the net & found one like this" # df -h" and it didn't say bad command or filename so I thought I was onto something. I wasn't. Could someone please tell me how to logon/logout of Debian 3.0?

Hi drknownothing,
if it says "username@box$" you are already logged in. I dont know how basic you woody installation is, maybe you want to go on with "tasksel" (where you can choose out of some pre-configured software compositions like "Desktop Box", Web Server", "Developers Box" etc.) HTH, Peter |
try this command
startx |
Still can't
"tasksel" worked as it allowed me to pick certain things but when I chose "finish" it says "could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13 Permission denied) "Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root username @username:~$" I don't know what to do next. Please help.

You should run "tasksel" as root, so type "su", then root password and then type "tasksel".
