What's a good 1 cd distro?
 

Im on 56k and this is really ticking me off.

I was 100 and something odd mb into college linux until i read this review

Try Knottix, its a bootable cd, and its aimed for desktop use to. Gnoppix, I havent realy seen (or tried) but it should work.

There are plenty of small Linux distros out there. Knoppix, LNX-BBC and Damn Small Linux come to mind some that are able to fit on a single CD or less. I'm not sure what you're looking for, capability-wise, but looking through the LQO distro page may give you some ideas. You should be able to find something in there to get you going.

damn small linux would be good...you will have to reinstall the man pages though.
I installed arch linux on my laptop...its i686 optimized, runs pretty nice. Only thing is the base install that I downloaded has no gui, its sort of a base system to build from. The nice thing is that you can use the package manager to install just what you want. ex: pacman -S X11 something like that would install Xwindows system and all dependencies

The download may take a while on 56k and you risk getting corrupted files. Do you know someone with a cable connection that could download for you? Also as for a distro on 1 CD , Try "Yoper" You can download it here It's said to be the fastest linux yet. And i have to say that it is as good as any distro I have tried.

You won't find a much more "complete" OS than Yoper. I misunderstood your original post, I read that you had a 56k dial up.

singleUbuntu, it fits on a single disc, it has a fairly simple installer, and It comes with the GNOME Desktop Environment, OpenOffice, The GIMP, Mozilla Firefox, Totem Media Player, and a number of other things. It uses a the Debian package management system, and you can install new apps with a program called Synaptic, which is a Graphical Frontend to the Debian package management system. I Installed Ubuntu on our families' computer, and my mom, who can find anything if it isn't right on the desktop, figured it out. It is cool.

Get slackware live or mandrake move. Both are single CD's. Place to get them would be www.xplinux.biz/

i like damn small linux. it is based on debian-knoppix. it fits on a mini-cd, the download is only 49 MB, and it works. it can be run 'live' from the cd, or be installed to the hard drive.

Slackware is good. I would download it through a BitTorrent client like Azureus. Azureus is a Java based BitTorrent so you do not have to go nuts learning a new BitTorrent program for Linux.

BitTorrent does md5sum so on a crappy dial-up connection it will not give you any errors. With BitTorrent you do not have to verify the images after the download to make sure they are alright.

Nobody will give out free CDs unless you supply the CDs.
