WG111T question

Ok I'm relatively new to Linux but I have worked with Unix amd Windows (NT, XP & 200x) for about 20 years

I have recently retired & would like to change my home evironment from XP to Linux. I have a few VB6 programs I have written to help with home management (shopping, cashflow and budgets)

I've loaded Ubuntu 11.10 which my wife finds easy to use and it she thinks it has great games. My problem is that she doesn't see a problem with windows and the constant problems I have with the trojans she downloads and social network downloads, blah blah blah, and I'd be foolish to try to explain it but the Netgear WG111T dongles don't work with Ubuntu, or most major Linux OS's due to the lack of Atheros firmware in the dongle.

I've tried (I think) all the links on the Linux forums to get the WG111T to work but have failed. I suspect the ones that work use the version that does have the firmware built into the hardware.

My question is what do I need to buy to work with Linux (I only have USB dongles because the came with my Netgear router. PCI or USB would be fine.

Fox

Honestly, this is up to you. I would do the research on whatever you come across first before purchasing. That being said though, I have a ralink chipset, and it works wonders. If you are interested, I have the Alfa AWUS036NH, and is perfect for my needs. I picked it up for a good price online; There are many others out there, but I am only giving my two cents on what I think the best chipset I have used.

Cheers,

Josh

Bought a Ralink RT2561 PCI card and it works great with XP and Ubuntu 11.10 (cost about £6)

Thanks all who posted advice.
