Weird problem with xine in amaroK 1.3.8 - skipping tracks???

So, I am trying to use amaroK in SUSE 10.0 (with KDE 3.4.2).

I had an old version (not sure which) of amaroK at first, then upgraded it to version 1.3.8. As far as I can tell, 1.3.8 doesn't have the Helix engine, which is what I was using in amaroK before (even though it was a bit glitchy -- that's why I wanted to update ...).

Since the helix engine is apparently nonexistent, I tried switching to the xine engine, but it won't actually play any music?
If I choose a song and then hit play, it just switches instantly to the next track, and then to the next track after that, etc -- it never actually starts playing music, just skips through my playlist like a six year old through a field of daisies. D:

Does anyone know why the xine engine makes it skip in amaroK 1.3.8?? Or what I can do to fix this problem? It's really annoying/confusing. I haven't been able to find any information so far ... if you could even just point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.

(Posted this here instead of in software because it seems like there should be a blindingly obvious solution to this... plus I'm a total newbie myself, soo ... uhm!)

Thanks!

usually the best way to see what is going wrong is starting an app. in a shell,

when you open Konsole and type amarok, do you get any error messages?

Yup, I get errors that way. These are what I get:

amaroK: [Loader] Starting amarokapp..
amaroK: [Loader] Don't run gdb, valgrind, etc. against this binary! Use amarokap p.
QLayout: Adding KToolBar/mainToolBar (child of QVBox/unnamed) to layout for Play listWindow/PlaylistWindow

Not sure what that means... hopefully that tells someone something, though?

don't think its really an error message, but there must be somethng wrong for sure
when googling for this message http://www.google.nl/search?q=amaroK%3A+%5BLoader%5D+Don't+run+gdb%2C+valgrind%2C+etc.+against+this+binary!+Use+amarokap+ p.&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-USfficial
there seem to be problems with some mysqllibs and alsa with other users, but they get a more precise message then you do.

can i ask what exactly the reason was for upgrading amarok?
if the previous version you had installed worked fine it would be my first hunch that that is causing your problem for as far as i can tell from here.

if the previous version worked, can you try to downgrade your amarok version?

My previous version basically worked, but whenever I would change tracks to the next song it would mute the volume. I'd hoped upgrading would fix it or something, I don't know... bah, I'll just go back to that version I guess...

Thanks!
