weird mouse problem with installing mandrake 9.2

hi everyone,

i am both new to this forum and linux in general. i decided to just try out linux, it was recommended since i do quite a bit of programming and get annoyed at windows. so i downloaded the mandrake 9.2 iso(s) and tried to install them.

it all went fine, mouse working even on the 'choose your mouse' screen. wheel mouse was highlighted, and while the mouse working there was also a 'microsoft explorer' option and my mouse is a "microsoft intellimouse explorer 3.0". so i clicked on it and said 'next' or something.

it then went to a screen telling me to test the mouse. however, it had stopped moving, no buttons were working, though it was obviously a driver problem since the little red light was still lit on the mouse.

so i navigated back with the keyboard, and reselected 'wheel mouse' and pressed next, once more with the keyboard. but the mouse still wasn't working! i then tried every other mouse, but they all had the same problem and since it takes a while to configure the mouse changing i didnt want to waste my time.

so i went to windows, did something, then restarted the computer booting from the cd. the mouse worked fine, but as soon as i hit the 'configure mouse' page, without even doing anything it stopped working like before. i restarted again, but this time the mouse worked initially and stopped at the license page. unfortunately i couldnt use the keyboard now.

so i am stuck at the most basic of hurdles and cannot do anything. is the cd storing old install information somewhere, or is it being weird? will i have to do a non-graphical install (which I would rather not)

on a slightly different point, assuming everything works, is there a real driver for my mouse waiting for me at the end of the mandrake tunnel?

thanks a lot, i am going to go now and play around with the install some more

yes there is a real driver for your mouse after install.
not real familiar with mandrake, but xfree is the same on all distro's. somewhere there will probably be a graphical config utility, or you can run xfconfig as root from the command line after install.
