Weird internet connection problem with Ubuntu, please help me.

Hi,

Well, I have the latest version of Ubuntu dual booted with windows vista (Via wubi-installer) I am a uber noob at linux and at pretty much all aspecs of the internet. So I tried to connect to my normal network (It works fine on windows) I entered in my WEP key and the little thing in the top right hand corner started spinning then it just came back again with the same login prompt and I'm not connected to the internet. I know the password was right though. I tried again and again and it won't work. So I actually plugged my rowter cable into my laptop and now it works. I'm connected to auto eth0. It's not really a big problem but I'd like to know if there is any solution to fix this. By the way here is some additional information about version etc.

I had a problem with wireless in ubuntu 9.04 as well and fixed it by using wicd. It will disable network manager. So you can try it.

sudo apt-get install wicd

/etc/init.d/wicd start

May be you would need to restart. I had to in my case.

Can you somehow check what key you are putting Ascii or Hex because windows by default takes HEX keys and I think here in Linux you may have to define what type of key you are using hope this helps...

I had a similar problem, and it was because I had hidden my SSID (that is a setting on the wireless router).

It seems that Ubuntu 9.04 does not like that.

Making your SSID visible does make your wireless less secure, I suppose brute force attacks are easier if people can see the name of the router. I changed mine to visible, as would rather have it working, than more secure and not working :)
