Weird crc problem

I installed Slackware from the CD and it ran fine. I changed some entries in the lilo.conf file. I mainly added a line "default=Linux" right before the VGA section and then I rebooted the machine. On reboot, I got the Linux uncompressing .. CRC error, System Halted. So then I rebooted again with the Slackware CD and booted to my root directory, which worked fine. Then I just edited the lilo.conf file and deleted that "default" line and rebooted again. This time again I got the same CRC error. Now why would I get this error message and do I need to do something with lilo.conf everytime I change something. I also deleted rc.acapi, rc.fonts, rc.httpd and then on rebooting I got the same CRC error message, however I again put in the Slackware CD, booted to my root partition, ran liloconfig, changed the lilo.conf and ran it and rebooted and it was fine. Is that normal? So in a way do I need to run liloconfig and lilo.conf everytime I do anything with my box? I'm confused.. Sorry for making it this long. Thanks in advance!

when you make a change to lilo you must run /sbin/lilo as root.
