Smile Web Server

I am moving away from Mac Server to Linux.
I think I am going to go with Redhat but I am not sure.
Also any suggestions on other software I need
Example:apache and(MySQL)data base software.
Thank you for all of your help.

Welcome to LQ.

I think you've pretty much got it covered, you may want perl and php as well. For more information about compiling these programs from source see:

It depends what you'd like to have. Apache, MySQL and many more are included in nearly all distros. Peole usually install also DNS server (usually bind), mail server (example: postfix), FTP (example: proftpd).
RedHat is a good choice. If you're planning to start with a test server, you can check RH and see if you like it. If not, there are many more interesting distros for a server.

As with most distros you will be overwhelmed by the amount of software that is installed! A better question to ask your self is "What do I want to do with this box?" Chances are the service or software is already installed.

Please remember to check any server software that you open up to the world with the software's website to make sure there are no security vulnerabilities in your version. Reading unSpawns security bulletin on LQ is also another good idea.
