Web Hosting - Getting Started

First a disclaimer of sorts. I've never hosted a web-site and have never even had anyone else do it for me...But I'm very interested in the idea.

I've set LAMP up on slackware and everything seems to be as it should, it starts and stops OK and loads a test php page.

I've got some tutorials for hosting galleries and stuff, so now all I need is a domain name to get started, is that right? Presumably I just go to a website selling domain names and register and buy one? Is there anything else that's essential?

Yea, well, I'm a bit clueless about web hosting
:D

Cheers

That's one of the first 2 things to do - after you have the domain name you need it delegated to someone with a DNS server that points to your box.

If you're like a lot of people here you get an IP address assigned dynamically by your ISP so you can go to someone like http://www.dyndns.com/ and get them to take care of the DNS for you. You can also download a client from them that updates the record at the DNS provider so that when your IP address changes, people can still reach you by domain name.

Is http://www.dyndns.com/ a pay site or is it a free service? :)

Then PLEASE spend a bit of time in the Security forum reading about how to harden your box. There are lots of bad people out there looking to crack servers, and you don't want yours to be one of them.

Thanks for the answers.

No worries, I fully intend to do so, I'm a paranoid lock-down freak.

If you click on the Services tab at the top of their homepage, there's a run-down of what's on offer. The basic stuff (dynamic, static DNS) seems to be free, the custom stuff is not free.

One more question. I was thinking of starting a forum related to my job, I've seen a few amateur forums around and was wondering if anyone has had any postive experiences with basic tutorials using LAMP for getting one off the ground.

Cheers

What is LAMP?

chrism01 02-23-2006 11:38 PM

It's an acronym: Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl/Python/Php ...
A common Open source stack of Os, Webserver, DB, choice of langs; all of which come with std Linux distro.
