Warning: failed to connect to lvmetad < what to do?

The other day, I was working on my computer (Ubuntu 17.04) and had to power down. I quit all open software and powered down gracefully.

A few moments later, I powered up the computer and got the warning:

"Warning failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to device scanning.
/dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-root: clean, 885343/29450240 files, 51889090/117772288 blocks

there's also a blinking cursor on the next line. It has no effect no matter what key I press, including typing commands, such as exit.

Same outcome if I hold Shift key during boot, either prior to or after hearing the startup chime.

I have never had any issue booting up this computer into Ubuntu 17.04. Last time I was working on this computer, there were no issues.

Is there anything I can do to get the computer to move beyond this, and, once I am back in the booted-up computer with ubuntu properly loaded, are there changes I ought to make to prevent this happening again?

Thank you!

Try first to disable lvmetad from /etc/lvm/lvm.conf and set use_lvmetad = 0. Use a live CD if you have to.

I can boot to that machine using the USB stick I used to install Ubuntu. Can you describe how I'd do the other part of your suggestion?

Thank you!
