wants root but not set up yet
 

I set up SuSE on a hard drive with windows and while I was very impressed with the installation (it even let me use my wireless mouse/keyboard) I seem to have made a critical mistake. SuSE 9.0 comes with 3 disks however due to time constraints I only installed one. As I understood it, this would be a basic setup and all the goodies were on disks 2 and 3. So after the install was completed I shut the computer down. That was probably a big mistake. When I started it back up I was prompted for a password and my keyboard doesn't work now(allthough the mouse does). During the install I'm pretty sure I was prompted to set up root or user accounts so maybe I needed to insert the second disk for that. I figured maybe I'd just put the second disk in and see if I could pick up from there but that didn't work. I didn't think of this at the time but maybe I should have tried to boot from the first disk instead. So anyway I'm at a crossroads here and I hope some of you folks can get me back on track.
I am really excited about changing to Linux and learning some new stuff so I hope this is a minor hiccup that can be easily resolved. Thanks in advance for your help.

Boot into single user mode then set the password. There may also be a way to get into rescue mode from the install CD. I have never used SuSe before but most have something to fall back onto. Re-installing is rarely a fix in Linux. It should be fixable, if a SuSe expert will post how to do this. :scratch:

If you re-run the install program, one of the installation options is to repair a system. If you have an actual problem with the install, this feature might be able to fix it. There is even an option to try recover an accidentally formatted drive. One of the repair options is to check the installed packages.

If you can remember the root password you used, you can run the yast program from the console. Using yast, you can select the 'hardware' setup, and reinstall your keyboard.

I was never prompted for a root password. I know that seems kind of strange but I only installed 1 disk. When I was prompted for the second disk I had the option to continur installation or stop there. I think you're right though, the first disk will probably hold the key to fixing this install. Thanks to both of you for the help. I'll post back when this is resolved.
