i am trying to uninstall the entire linux 8.2 from the computer. I have 2 OS on the computer. xp pro on main drive and linux on secondary drive.

-Get a bootable CD (Gentoo LiveCD or Knoppix is fine), or bootable floppy (OpenBSD's fine),
-boot it
-run fdisk / cfdisk, which one is contained on the CD / floppy you booted,
-Delete all ext2 / ext3 / ReiserFS/ JFS / XFS partitions.
-Run a boot manager, Lilo is fine, and tell it to jump to XP without prompting.

Should do it in my opinion.

ok is the disc or floppy something i have to buy or can i make it.

i assume that by linux 8.2 you mean redhat, and if so just go and download the new version that you want and install it normally, and it will ask if you want to upgrade.

If you are not using Redhat 8.2, then you can just download the new distro you want and install it and if it is an easy distro, it will give an option to "use existing partitions", just choose that.

to get rid of LILO or GRUB when you boot up your computer (the options you can select to boot up into - linux, windows, failsafe, etc) just boot up with the XP cd, and select rescue. I don't remember what else it asks, but i do know it asks some weird stupid question like "do you want to rescue a previous installation of windows?". Say yes, and you'll want to have a command line (*laughs*) so you can type "fixmbr" or something similar. Type that in and it'll warn you that you'll be overriding the master boot record and data might get corrupted, etc etc. Just say yes and it's over in a second. reboot and it should automatically load windows. Now you still have a few partitions on your drive with linux on them, but windows cannot access them without third party software. Thus, I would recommend Partition Magic or some bootable cd that would do it for you. All you need to do is erase the linux (ext2 or ext3) partitions and the linux swap. You'll end up with "unallocated space" which you can either make into another "drive" on your system (D:\ or E:\ or whatever), or merge with another one (partition magic does this nicely).
