Want to Learn Linux System Online
I am new to Linux & Unix environment.
Could anyone please provide me the Internet URL where I can learn Linux online Free of Cost? Where would I get a chance to do hands on while learning this new topic? Thanks in advance for any king help Regards, Jayant |
hi, welcome to Linux...
Umm, why go online? Have an old(er) box around? Slap Linux on it :) One, you're already there: this forum... What level of learning can you take? Manjaro - light fast, never complains, have to work the console Arch - light, fast, can be nasty as you HAVE to work the console - NOT as simple as mentioned on the tin... Linux from scratch - dont even try that LOL sweet to work with, but you have to do ALL yourself - if you can get a workable desktop..then you CAN wear the tee shirt... Fedora - wondeful to learn from as a lot is broken (hoping not to get into trouble for this hehe) Ubuntu - perfect to work - works directly and independently - you rarely need the console - but...that depends WHAT you want to learn from Linux... Honestly...an old PC is your best friend :) Not to mention...this forum :) Welcome Thor |

If you want to learn linux don't bother with ubuntu, all you will learn is how to use ubuntu, the distro and the ubuntu forums tend to discourage 'getting down and dirty', and you can be booted off of the ubuntu forums for telling someone how to enable the root user! But if you just want an easy system to just use then ubuntu is fine. If you really want to learn HOW linux works try Slackware, it's hard but you WILL learn a lot ( I did! ). |

Me? I just booted a Puppy 2.15 live session on a Compaq 1540DM years ago and went on from there, (buying MCycle parts on ebay). The more I practiced. The easier things got for me. Start with whatever makes you comfy. Don't listen to me either (read my sig). |
I don't think you will find one go-to online tutorial site, but a web search for "Linux tutorial" will turn up many useful results.
You can find a lot of useful documentation at The Linux Documentation Project, and Going Linux has lots of helpful articles, videos, and podcasts. You can also find lots of tutorials on YouTube. Many of them are quite good. Others, otherwise. |

I started running Fedora on my everyday personal system about a year ago. Running Linux isn't hard, it just takes some time to learn.
Google will direct you to help for most any question you have. There are sites like this one, and each distribution will have its own forum. Google will direct you to a site with a summary of Linux and Unix commands. So far the only distro I use is Fedora (20,21 and 22) |

jayantbhoge,
Welcome to LQ. From what little information you have provided, I am only guessing at your primary motivation for learning Linux. Since you also mentioned Unix, perhaps you wish to learn for employment reasons as opposed to just surfing the net etc? If that is the case, I suggest that you look at this link, especially post #8: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...at-4175540625/ More links: Learn Linux: http://freevideolectures.com/blog/20...earning-linux/ Linux programming: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/newto/ If you are interested in learning RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux), it may be a good idea to get familiar with its clone CentOS which is free. http://www.zdnet.com/article/red-hat...-clone-centos/ http://www.computerworld.com/article...rs-is----.html http://www.centos.org/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CentOS If you require further advice, please let us have more details of your situation. |
