A suitable general technique is to download installation CD or DVD .iso file(s), loop mount it/them and create an on-disk directory-and-file structure which can be used from a boot manager to boot an installation system and do the installation. Details are specific to the distro you want to install. Which one is that?

http://wubi-installer.org/ is an idea.

Zipslack is still possible if you have fat.

Co-linux and a few others even MKS toolkit.

Normally one uses a bootable media to install an OS. I don't think you can use the old loadlin trick to change it that way. If you had a floppy you could try bko or netboot.me which is basically a simple pxe for the masses.

well, it looks like someone needs a cosmic OS =) that will come from space and just install itself without messing with hw =)
nice thread anyways, I'll monitor this.
which distro do you want to install?

Another method is to remove the hard drive from the laptop and temporarily install it in another system or a USB drive enclosure connected to another system.

ZipSlack is a Slackware Linux that can be installed onto any FAT (or FAT32) filesystem with about 100 MB of free space and that you do not need to repartition your hard disk if you already have DOS or Windows installed.

Awesome Solution... what if i need Fedora in my laptop!
catkin,lwasserm,Web31337,jefro... i need Fedora... i only got (256 mb ram) i dont have floppy...

You won't get very far on that much ram.

I have used wubi several times and it will install with just a internet connection. However it is a rather touchy when your done installing it. I have experienced Kernal panic and several other errors that would not allow me to boot. I did alot of research on it and the best that I can figure out is that installing that way is unstable and sensitive to hard shutdowns. I would not recommend it for anything other than a easy way to experiment with linux.
