want to get Redhat installed while having Windows OS too...
Hi guys,
is it possible to have linux installed (redhat version) to a OS with Win98, which is a pentium 1 machine and have both operating systems together? If so can i get the linux OS installed through the net or something while still having the WIndows os as well? If this is possible what would be the procedure that i'd have to follow?? Thanks in advance!! |
Yes, that's called dual-booting. ;)
All you have to do is install linux. After you install linux you will have a boot manger... such as lilo. (it depands on the distro you will choose to use...) So when you start your computer, you have a choise: windows Linux fail safe 'etc and you can boot into either linux or windows. |
While it is possible to install linux on a window's machine it can be extreamly tricky for an inexperianced user, trying to do it over the net.
I would suggest using if at all possible a cdrom of linux to install. If trhat is not an option then get someone who can help you "in-the-flesh." Explaining it over the web leaves to much of a chance for error. |

tricky in the sense, how bad could it be? What are the probs that i'll experience? even if i fail in the task while trying to install redhat through the net on my own,i would still have my Windows OS undamaged as it was right? I can still try to get someone who can help me "in-the-flesh." but i wish to know how i can get it done, (provided that i won't lose my prevailing WIN98 OSfor a slightest mistake that i might make...) i can get REDHAT installed through this site itself right?? (bottom line...i still wanna have windows too atleast until i get totally used to Linux) Please do help me out!! Thanks in Advance! |

I had Mandrake 9 and Win98 dualbooting. Mandrake install was a breeze including the partitioning with Disk Druid. I ran it multiple times with various selections without issue.
When I decided to try Red Hat 9.0 it reported partition problem and said I would have to recreate the partitions. I don't know what a newbie would do if they encountered 'disk telemetry blah blah' type problems. Run away, probably. |
it would be wise to repartition your hard drive in windows and have at least 3 gb for unpartitioned space. much safer :)

Mostly because of the numerous problems that can (which usually means WILL) occur with the disks and modules.
I currently am the sysadmin of a modest 15 node cluster with usually around 40-60 users. This dosn't make me an expert in all fields, obviously. However, it means I have enough experience to know that it can get extremely frustrating. Particularly with the network modules. I encourage you to try if you want, however If you are interested in step-by-step instructions then I suggest you RTFM. |

But i think you should first have a look at the Linux HOWTOs to get a better idea about the whole thing before venturing into something that you have no idea of. One of the very simple and immencely informative one is by one Mr Subhasish Ghosh, you can find it here : http://www.tldp.org/LDP/Win+BSD+Linu...html/index.htm There are many HOWTOS available on http://www.tldp.org but i suggest this as this is very simple!!! Get Mandrake. Put first install disk in CD drive. Install package will ask you what packages you want and how you want your hard disk partitioned. Choose automatic. Make sure 'Automatic' does not mean overwriting your blue FAT (Windows) partition. It shouldn't. Follow the instructions onscreen. Please be patient this may take a while...

Why isn't there a sticky-post on this forum for dual booting questions? It seems like everytime on come on here someone is asking if it is possible to keep windows while they play with linux....

Sachitha, if you know how to do a clean WIN install, with "fdisk" and etc. Then you OK. Just go for it and if something happens just start again and at least you can always get back to where you were at the begining. Go for it. |

I agree with above suggestion... (i.e. sticky post with HOW-TO create a win/linux dual boot system) I'm a linux newbie myself, and just bought a pc and installed linux rh8 2 weeks ago. If you look for step by step procedure... Try to download and install red hat linux... (from official web site) Also, there are manuals on how to use linux commands... The most useful manual is the "installation" manual with step-by-step procedure... (everything is free) I'm now struggling with learning and trying to install Nvidia drivers for both motherboard and graphics card. Any advice/help on HOW-TO install these drivers are greatly appreciated. Linuxlinus :newbie: |
