Question Want to Edit Commands accepted by linux in the source code

Greetings of the day to one and all.

I am pursuing B-Tech in computer science (Open Source Soft-wares and Open Standards).

I want to edit the linux commands in the source code and give my own command word such as ls to upls or anything, but i dont know how to start.

I have learnt a lot about open source communities during my studies but this is the first time i will be seeing the real & practical development through this community to my project.
Please help me guys.
