Want to backup DVDs

I have a DVD drive, an older one (8x)... I don't mind.

What I'd like to do is rip DVDs (simply the movie, no need for special features) to a file of decent (perferably free compression).

My requirements are that the file must fit onto a CD of 700MB or less. I have NO DVD and DVD Ripping expireince on GNU/Linux. I've found excellent documentation out there but it's all Win32 related. Is there a Free alternative to Divx that is popular and well supported? I enjoy Divx but i'd like to stick to Free Software.

Perhaps you guys can give me a few pointers. Didn't acid_kewpie design a program for this?

trickykid 04-10-2003 05:51 PM

yep, acid did - http://acidrip.sf.net

acid_kewpie 04-10-2003 05:59 PM

Is that maybe cause if they didn't, your app wouldn't work.... :)

acid_kewpie 04-10-2003 06:07 PM

well it took some convincing, but they're nearly able to hold a pen with their hands again....

bkeating 04-10-2003 06:08 PM

is it possible to encode a videos audio as Vorbis?

What is a free(dom) alternative to Divx?

I'll confirm that once you explained to me
what the mumble about mencoder and mp3
is ;) ... neither in mplayers nor in your configure/
readme/install I can find a reference on how
to get mp3 support into mencoder ;)

Cheers,
Tink

acid_kewpie 04-10-2003 06:20 PM

for mp3 you need the lame libraries installed. when you recompile mplayer (assuming you're going via source) then it will pick up lame if it's been installed correctly. if it's set u pinside mencoder, acidrip will autoamatically recognise this.

mencoder can't encode to ogg vorbis yet... only a matter of time though, a lot of work is being done into it.

freee divx... well the FFMpeg (lavc) codecs that mencoder prefers is a 100% open source implemenation of divx...

bkeating 04-10-2003 06:23 PM

lavc for video then :) Any good free audio solutions that are available atm?

your app looks really nice - can't wait to hop on my box and try it out!

Tinkster 04-10-2003 06:27 PM

Odd .. I can't understand why mplayer
didn't pick up the lame library the first
time around ... I had it installed before
I compiled Ogle ... :\

Oh well :)

Now if only I had my LOTR DVD at work :D

Cheers,
Tink

And if you run into any trouble, don't forget to read my awesome Installation Howto I wrote for acidrip.. ;)

what do you think i can get by with as far as hardware goes?

Got an old 8xDVD and my machine is a 2Ghz p4 but...

I also have a P2 333Mhz just sitting here... think that'd work?

Your not going to get the greatest performance out of a machine like that but it should work ok. I run movies on dvd, ripped by acidrip on a 500mhz celeron and it works fine.

DVD:RIP is absolutelty great, I have been using it for a long time now, it rips, encodes, makes SVCD's, VCD's, mpegs, divx 4, divx 5, avi, ffmpeg, ogg...... the list of abilities is long, all with a very nice GUI.

I rip all my DVD's and create SVCD's with it. It is so simple, my wife who doesn't use Linux can use it without any problems.
You'll find it here.

You sound like you work for them or something...

acid_kewpie 04-11-2003 11:00 AM

Video::DVDRip is pretty good, i certainly prefer my application though as it's all in plain english and doesn't require any special settings or analysis, it's all automated. It doesn't have a lot of the more advanced features that dvd::rip has as I believe that if you want to use them you should know what they do first, and so can add them directly, rather than simply haivng a button for eerything it could possibly do. acidrip can do anythjing mencoder can do if you tell it to.

BruceCadieux 04-11-2003 07:31 PM

Nope don't work for them. Just love the app. It works great and the default settings worked great for me, it was a no brainer to set up.

When I find something I like I use it.

Haven't tried acidrip.
