Question Wannabe Linux Help

Hi. I'm looking for some advice please. I want a 10' notebook with a HDD (100GB +), decent battery (more than 4 hours), basic program capability (simple photo edit and video/music player), and a fast boot system. I've heard that Linux can give me what I need but, being a simpleton with computers and a PC girl so far, I'm unsure what to look for.
I know the differences between Windows systems and how they work but whenever I look for Linux, there are alot of thing I don't understand. Can someone give me a "Dumbos Guide" please? Boot time and program capabilities etc and any notebooks which are recomended.

Welcome to LQ.

Rute Users Tutorial and Exposition is a good start. Quoting from the Rute website:
Rute is a technical reference and teaching tool for new GNU/Linux users as well as advanced administrators. A copy should be available from your local book store.
You can also download it from the link given above.

PS: is your friend. Use it to research questions about GNU/Linux.
