Wallpaper

OK, now that I have Mandrake actually visible...thank to all for the previous help!!

I am trying to download a wallpaper to /usr/share/wallpapers but I get an error that I do not have permission to copy to that folder. I'm guessing that I have to be logged on as root. How do I do that in KDE? When I log on, I only get an option to log on as my user, not as a root.

What's a good book to learn about Linux?

Hello dear,
Instead of offering some help to you i'm seeking help from your side..........
i had windows XP and fedora core 2 on my machine....
yesterday i just started installing mandrake 10.1 removing the
windows partition.
But to my great surprise, just after installation i realized that mandrake's boot loader just over written the fedor's bootloader and moreover there was no graphical interface there in mandreake.............
so as u stated that u too were facing problem regarding the graphical interface in mandrake.........i think u can help me.....
..........
regards
ruudra

1) Use sudo, su or kdesu in a terminal (xterm, konsole, eterm etc.).

2) Running Linux (Welsh, Kaufman et al.). Google is your friend, as the saying goes...

Cheers,

mj

You dont want to login and download stuff as root, That is bad protocol due to the insecurity involved.
You would be better off downloading the wallpaper pic to a users account then using it from that directory. Maybe create a pictures directory like /home/username/Pics
Or the above posts suggestions should work fine.

ruudra - sounds like you have two problems in front of you...

Firstly, you'll need to add a stanza for Fedora to your /etc/lilo.conf in Mandrake (have a quick search of these forums - there are hundreds of threads going over the exact same problem). Second, you'll need to modify your Xorg.conf (or XF86Config-4 file) to setup the X windowing system. Also, many similar threads. Have a search and a read, and let me know if you need a hand afterwards.

Cheers,

mj
