-edit- Although I've written a million words, it's actually very easy. -edit-

It will be a bit different on each machine but usually when you boot up the computer after having previously shut it down, there will be a message that appears briefly saying something like
"Hit Del for setup" or maybe "Hit F2 for setup"
Often it says that at the top or bottom of the screen.

It then gives you a couple of seconds to hit whichever key opens the program and if you don't do anything, it goes on to boot the computer and load the operating system.

This is the BIOS and it runs before the operating system loads. Look out for it when you next restart the computer.

On my system, theres a big image that gets displayed as and it tells me underneath "Hit Del for setup". When I hit Delete just at that moment, it stops doing what it normally does and loads a new menu screen for me to change options.

Again, the precise nature of the options available to you will be different to other computers, and will depend on the motherboard, processor and other internals of the machine. But generally speaking you can navigate your way through the different choices using the up/down/left/right cursor keys and make you changes with space and enter.

I'll reboot my machine now and will have a look at the name of the setting I changed. Yours might not have exactly the same name but it might be similar.

Ok, on mine, it actually says something like "Press delete to enter BIOS", so I did that and it showed me a bunch of menus and buttons. Older systems tend to have text-only menus but these days they might also have graphics and let you use the mouse. Even though I can use the mouse in mine, it still had a little message telling me that I can navigate around using the cursor keys, as I described above.
The setting I went to on my system was under these headings
"Settings" -> "Advanced" -> "Wake Up Event Settings"
Under "Wake Up Event Settings" it offered me a number of options, which were mostly all in a "Disabled" state.
I went to the one that said "Resume from S3/S4/S5 by USB Device" and selected it with the space key - it offered me the choice to set the value to either "Disabled" or "Enabled".
I picked "Enabled".
Then I went back the the first screen and chose "Save and Exit".
Then the computer rebooted, and I let it start up as it normally would.
The only difference now is that if I suspend the computer, I can wake it up by nudging the mouse or hitting keys on the keyboard.

S3/S4/S5 are different classifications of sleep or suspended mode.
My keyboard and mouse are plugged in via USB. There were separate choices in the BIOS settings for other connections but that was the one I needed.
