I compiled a 2.4.22 kernel, and got the sound "working"; except that it sounds like birds chirping. It plays each note about four or five times.

Mine plays happily under Knoppix or Movix.

You compiling as modules or statically?
do lsmod and see what is loaded..
do lspci -v to see what the pci bus recognises it as.
