volume of laptop dead after inastalling mplayer

after i installed mplayer in my laptop from package manager,i found that all other players including mplayer now do not give the same sound output.thae maximum putput is barely audible.have checked the settings and everything is maximum.i dont know what went wrong.however there was a notification before installation that some unauthenticated packages can effect your other programs.if so how do i remove those unwanted files?i run gutsy

You should provide more details when you ask a question. For example when you say that you have checked all of the settings what do you mean? Did you run alsamixergui? If not then try that. When the window appears check to see if the volume for each channel and for each device is at the maximum value (all the way up). Also make sure that none of the channels or devices are muted. Look for a check box for that, just like in Windows.

alsamixer is not currently installed in my it necessary to install it?
