You can set the vncserver resolution to whatever you like (within limits!). It is just the resolution that is generated by the vncserver, the physical screens on that PC can have different resolutions.

If the physical resolution is 800x600, you can use that for the vncserver as well. If the vncserver's resolution is larger than can be displayed on your remote PC, you'll get scroll-bars to scroll around it (this makes using it a PITA though). Just experiment with different settings until you find one you are comfortable with.

Thank you for the thanks, but it's faster just to click the "Thumb-up" icon at the bottom of my post.
Have fun.

I think im confused. Tell me if this doesnt sound like what I should be doing...

-My box is up and running at home.
-I get to work and I use TightVNC on Windows XP to connect.
-When i do this the screen (my desktop at home) is 800x600.
-If I go to my preferences on my box at home that is the highest resolution it goes to. (800x600)
-If I am at home I can go to the same prefences and can set it to 1024x768 or even higher...its defaulting to something like 1980x something because it hooked up to my tv.
-If I try to change the resolution from 800x600 to anything else my connection drops and I can no longer connect with tightvnc. I can still ssh in though.

I think i have either skipped some step in getting this all setup or im drawing a blank about whats going on here. Any clues? Suggestions?
