VNC over SSH Question

Hello All,

I'm a super newbie and been messing around with Fedora core 1. I was looking to setup a secure vnc session. I can SSH to fedora with the firewall on or off and can connect through vnc with out SSH when the firewall is off.

I followed some instructions I found on LinuxQuestions.org on setting up VNC over SSH. I turned my Firewall back on and allowed SSH. Everything looks correct. I installed PUTTY setup tunnels on ports 5900 - localhost:5901.

Then I connect to the server using SSH enter username and password everything up to this point works fine.

Next I open VNC or Tight VNC and try to log in on localhost:1. I click ok. Then connection box disappears and I'm in limbo no password screen comes up nor do i receive an error message.

If I try connecting on localhost:2 i recive an error saying Failed to connect to server.

I have all my computers setup on a LAN with a small workgroup switch.

Thanks

Try doing the SSH forwarding the other way around
in Putty SSH tunnels configurations, leave the checkbox on local, enter 5901 in source port, <vnc server>:5900 in destination.
Also double check that the VNC server is running on port 5900

thanks for the help. I changed PuTTy tunnel properties and I'm still not getting any response not even an error message. How can I check if vncserver is running on port 0?

Try allowing 580x ports as well. I think the connection is initiated on 5800 +display ports

netstat -putlan

btw if the vncviewer quits with no error message or response that sounds like a firewall problem.
