VNC Install.
Hello everyone and thanks for taking the time to read my post. This is my very first time using Linux and I know very little about it. I just recently installed CentOS 5.2 x32 and Yum. With Yum I installed the Gnome Desktop Environment. I am intending on using this as a Server. I am aware that it would be better to just use SSH, however, I feel like my chances of screwing up something are far less likely if I have a live desktop environment to work with. I know I probably need a system administrator but I am using this server for experimental purposes to obtain a better understanding of Linux.
I am stuck on figuring out how to install VNC and which version of VNC I should use to connect to it. Also, after VNC is installed do I need to issue a command to start Gnome? I appreciate the help as I know this is probably a re-occurring question on these forums. I found this tutorial while searching through google. Is this all I need to do? http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/VNC-Server Thanks again =). |
That howto looks pretty good. Seems to cover all the basics in addition to using ssh port forwarding to secure the connection.
The do-I-need-to-start-gnome part of your question is addressed in the howto (Section 2.4). |
Perfect! I got it working =). Is there a better VNC Viewer than Real VNC? Its a little choppy.

There's the tightvnc viewer which was forked from RealVNC and has better support for slow connections. It's a fact of life that unless you're running a gigabit network, there's going to be some lag. If you reduce the colour depth on the server then you're likely to have a smoother experience, though you'll lose some quality.
