VMWare shared folder enabled but no folder under /mnt/hgfs

Windows 8.1 running Centos using VMplayer

Under Machine Settings/Options I set a shared folder. Folder exists on the Windows Host but when I:

ls /mnt/hgfs

in CentOS
no folder exists.

Any help gratefully received.

My problem turned out to be that whilst the installation instructions I was following imply that the default settings for the VMware tools should be OK - if you select those without having an X set up, the installation aborts without properly installing - hence no share.
