Talking VMWARE Server and Power PC Mac

Hi,

I am trying to run vmware server on a PPC G5 Mac running fedora 8. when i try and config the VMWARE i get this message

//=====================================

Your processors do not support the ^cpuid instruction. VMware Server will not
run on this system.

Your /proc/cpuinfo is:

processor : 0
cpu : PPC970, altivec supported
clock : 1310.960000MHz
revision : 2.2 (pvr 0039 0202)

processor : 1
cpu : PPC970, altivec supported
clock : 1310.960000MHz
revision : 2.2 (pvr 0039 0202)

timebase : 33333333
platform : PowerMac
machine : PowerMac7,2
motherboard : PowerMac7,2 MacRISC4 Power Macintosh
detected as : 336 (PowerMac G5)
pmac flags : 00000000
L2 cache : 512K unified
pmac-generation : NewWorld
Execution aborted.

//=======================================

I want to do this so i can ultimately run windows and mac vm's on my desktop and i want to use this version as we have a production vmware environment and i would like to be able to build test and mess around with vm's on my local box.

Any help would be much appreciated .. i am not a complete newbie but not an expert by any streatch of the imagination.

Bob

Hi.

I use VMware Server on an Intel server. Looking at the VMware web site as well as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari...rtual_machines , I don't see that the PowerPC is supported.

Do you know of documentation to the contrary? ... cheers, makyo

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback, yes after a fair bot of time this weekend i have discovered that powerpc can only relaly use the microsoft prodiuct or "q" which i did get going but it is not really going to deliver what i need so i have gone back to my mac mini as a workstation. this however only works with vmware fusion

thanks for the feedback though

For those who find the above post a bit cryptic, there was another post at http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...pc-mac-639246/ that was closed because it was a duplicate.

Now Bob_D knows not to do that ... cheers, makyo
