[SOLVED] vmware server
 

I am attempting to install vmware server on Ubuntu 6.06. It does not come in the repositories. Only vmware player does. I'm at the vmware website. Is it better to compile vmware from source, or download and compile it from software. I've had some bad expierences compiling on Linux, but not compiling worked sometimes without problems? Are there any known problems with the binaries or source tarballs for vmware server?

There is a update patch you are going to want to find for VMware. I honestly for the life of me cannot think of the name. Dig around on the search function for VMware and you will see posts/info on it on the forum. Basically when you install Vmware it points to a directly file/directory that does not exsist and the patch corrects this problem. However I did see VMware release a new version so this bug may have been resolved in the new release. Other then that the install is very very easy to do. I am also a newb to linux and found that vmware itself was one of easier applications to get installed and running (once I was able to identify the install bug that is).

vmware does not offer a source package. so there is no possible way to compile it from source.

it does offer two ways of downloading vmware server. You can download the file in RPM format or a tar.gz. both of them do essentially the same thing dump the files out and runs the vmware installer script. This installer script copies the vmware files in the right places and will automatically compile some network related things for you.

you'll probably want the tar.gz file since ubuntu isn't rpm based.
