vmware - grub install doesnt recognise device sda - why??

i have ubuntu and i installed vmware-workstation...on which i am installing gentoo. When installing grub and configuring it...i tried to set my boot partition as sda i.e. (sd0,0)... but it says "error while parsing number"...
Using tab doesnt even list the sda partition...only hda...should i just use that or will it mess up my system?

(Using sda coz thats what is suggested on gentoo wiki).

no matter, what you have sda or hda in grub you use it as hd and not sd
