VLC opening (almost) everything, need step by step fix

VLC is opening (almost) everything.
Especially downloads.
I know it is a known problem. Did search for fix on forum, couldn't find it.
How do I reset the default settings. Need a step by step fix.
Allready re-installed VLC. Did not help.
Using Linux Mint.

Can you explain the problem better?

Such as:
You download stuff and VLC auto-runs it?

You go to open one file and VLC opens all files?

Something else?

If I download file, clicking on it results in VLC opening it. Even when it cannot do anything with it.
Using Firefox.
If downloading pics from Google Photoos, in FF downloadmenu clicking on file results in VLC opening it, clicking on "show folder" results in VLC opening it.
If trying to install f.i. Testdisk, after downloading clicking on the file results in VLC opening it and this leads to no where.
If in desktop clicking on my Ext. HD icon: VLC opens it and starts playing random videofile , instead of showing the filemanager and the content of the disk.
etc...

Have recently received a "new" old pc (older one crashed) with Mint installed on it. Since this new pc this vlc issue appeared.
Probably somewhere something with settings, but I don't know where.

Did search for the solution to this problem online, found more people with the same problem but don't understand their fix.

And I don't know if this is related:
But if I close VLC, it will not restart. I have to reboot the pc to be able to open it again...
If this issue is not related then I will search for solution in other thread.

Right click on the file and select "open with other application" then select what you want to open it. You will need to do that with each different file format that you don't want VLC to open. Also, VLC has been having issues with not closing, closing it and then it doesn't open. Because the developers of VLC broke it and are refusing to correct these issues I switched to using Celluloid.

Well, that solution was so much more simple than expected. Just one step. :D Thank you very much. Problem solved. :hattip:

Ok, that explains it.
