Can you to try to allocate maximum GPU memory when you go to BIOS/UEFI? Could be buffering issue. You may want to have a look at this link https://superuser.com/questions/6835...-offline-files

Hope you recover quickly! I am about to try VLC after raising the number of milliseconds input to 1,000 as per the article C0wb0y had recommended.

Hi guys,

Alas, alas, So close but no cigar. Here is what happened. I increased the file caching to 1,000 ms and it played for about 15 minutes and then hung. So I went back and did what the article suggested and increased everything 1o 1000: live caching, disc capture caching [network was already at 1000]. The DVD ran for one hour and 53 minutes [film was 2 hours and 4 minutes long. Then it hung.

Is the following too crazy? When I uninstalled Windows 10, could I have damaged something or could it be that Windows has left something in the memory? Or could the hidden partition for Windows recovery cause problems? It looks like I am facing a complete re-install with my live DVD. Ouch.

I honestly don't know if a hidden partition could of created problems or not.
Maybe other members will know.
I haven't ran Windows in about 5 years:-

Ztcoracat, do you still have the hidden partition on your computer? Or did you remove it? If possible I would like to remove it on mine. My present struggle is to learn how to use smarmontools.

I removed it using the partition mgr that came with Fedora a long time ago.

You can use a Live Version of g-parted and delete the Windows partitions but you better be absolutely sure that's what you want to do. IF you don't have the Windows Recovery disc's you can say good bye to Windows for good.
http://gparted.org/

OR you can install g-parted on your Mint os and delete the Windows partitions that way.
Take a look at these links:-

OK guys, I checked my hard drive using Smartmontools -- took me some time to read and digest at least a portion, and based on my quick tests there is nothing wrong with the drive. However, I keep getting a reading as follows: "Interrupted (host reset)" . I checked on the net and found this answer:

"host may send a standby command to the drive after some time of I/O inactivity. This also aborts any running self-test. The self-test log then reports Aborted by host or Interrupted (host reset) as status. This is typical for drives behind USB bridges.

As a workaround, run some tool or script which perform periodic low volume read accesses"

Could this in anyway result in hanging my VLC when it is playing?

I hung Mint again. All I was doing was using page down and I probably went too quick. I had no more than four windows open: Libreoffice writer, two windows for Firefox and one terminal.

Well, I checked the hard drive [OK]; I installed Media codecs, I increased the milli seconds for VLC [File caching]l, and nothing worked. In fact VLC was worse, so I changed the numbers back to what they were except for the File caching line, which I had increased to 1000. I think it's time to re-install using the Live DVD. Before I start I will read up on Ztcoracat's recommendation re using Gparted to uninstall the windows recovery partition. I didn't like windows 8 so it will be no loss. And I am now so deeply into Linux that I will stick to it.
The one question I have is, does anyone else have issues with Mint 18 Cinnamon? Or is it just me?
One other question. Is it possible to use a "mirror" to make a backup of my files, as otherwise I will have to copy each one separately?

The possibility of hard disk causing this issue is very remote.

I was able to replicate it on CentoS. Albeit on VM so what I observed might not be exacly spot on. I was not able to solve it just yet. Although I have a hunch it is related to libdvdcss.

Did you observe the same issue when you attempt to playback unprotected DVDs (no DRM) as well?

Hi RenH I been monitoring.
From our passed posts he can play non css play normally.

If you want to check for bad blocks on a hdd in linux open a terminal and copy paste

Code:
sudo badblocks -v /dev/sda
It will scan the disk and show results. If bad blocks are found i would replace the disk myself. I still think it libdvdcss2 acting up but as to why i am out of options to try.

As for your data i have a external large GB usb thumb drive which i store all my files as backups. I than just copy them to home document folder. I use Grsync to backup new files from my home documents folder to my usb document_bak folder which than gets a master backup on a dvd. I am OCD at times 🙄.

The hidden partition that is the EFI is only a recovery partition. It is a booting partition but only if you access it though a function key, example is the HP pc I have windows 7 recovery. I had to access it by pressing f11 in my boot menu sceen. If you want to see mounted partitions on your pc open a terminal and type.

Code:
df -h

If by unprotected DVD you mean a DVD with a film I copied, no I don't have any. I do have music DVDs but I doubt if they would be sufficiently complex [?].

I pasted the command for checking for bad blocks, but I can't tell if the terminal is hanging or working in the background. After waiting a long time I cancelled the first try. The second try is still on and 17 minutes have passed and I am still waiting. The light for the hard drive is solid -- nothing flashing and nothing on the terminal to indicate live session. Only when I go to close it does it tell me that a process is on in the background.

Thanks for the idea -- I am going to buy a large thumb drive and backup my home folder. My external drive is very slow and I will use it as a secondary backup.
Am reading up on Gparted and will make a DVD tomorrow.

I will try the command for mounted partitions after I finish with the bad
blocks command.

Hi Dave,

I stopped the badblock action after 50 minutes because I think it just hung. Does it take that long?
